| Within weeks of arriving in Los Angeles Harley had a job
working for the May Company. It lasted only a couple of weeks. Within days
he had his second job, working for Safeway Stores. That too lasted only a
couple of months, but again, within days he was working again. This time
the job was at Union Oil Company. He worked for Union Oil from 1927 until
retirement in 1964. He was an accounting supervisor. This photo was taken
in the Union Oil building in Los Angeles, probably around 1949. Note the
row after row of desks with covered mechanical calculators. That's how
accounting was done before the days of computers! |
